Gail Elaine Rice McCarty, age 75, passed away on March 20, 2026. She was born on April 17, 1950, and lived a life defined by hard work, resilience, and quiet generosity.A graduate of Oconee County High School , Gail began her working life with Southern Bell as an operator before continuing her career with the Clarke County Clerk of Court’s office in Athens, Georgia. She later dedicated many years of service as a deputy sheriff with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Department, where she was known for her dependability and strong work ethic.A devoted mother, Gail worked tirelessly—often holding two jobs—to provide for her family as a single mom. She never wanted anything fancy and was content with what little she had. Despite facing her own challenges, she had a generous heart and would give whatever she could to help others, always putting people before possessions. She was a Baptist with strong faith and beliefs. Although she had not attended a specific church in recent years due to her health, her faith remained an important part of her life and she attended Bible study at her place of residence.

She is survived by her son, Shane McCarty, and his wife, Jennifer Grimes McCarty, and her beloved grandson, Tyler. She is also survived by her brothers, Phil Rice (wife Freida), Harvey Rice, and Kenneth Rice; her nephews, Joshua Shannon and Brandon Rice; her nieces, Carolyn Dillon, Angie Walden, Cassie Jones, Andi Hendricks, and Dezirae Rice as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilma Jeanette Rice and Eldridge Eugene “Gene” Rice, as well as her younger sister, Deborah Shannon who she missed dearly.

Gail shared a special and lasting friendship of more than 40 years with Muriel Price, a bond that remained constant throughout her life.Gail will be remembered for her strength, her independence, her selfless spirit, her contagious laugh and her unwavering faith. In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated, and no formal services will be held—just as she would have wanted, in her own words, “don’t make a fuss.”She will be deeply missed and forever loved by those who knew her.Rest easy Mama, I hope I see you again some day.
