Raymond Thomas Hunter Jr., lovingly known to many as “Big Play Ray,” passed away on March 12, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of laughter, hard work, and deep love for his family and friends. He was born on January 5, 1953, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and spent his later years enjoying life in North Port, Florida.
Ray was the son of Raymond Thomas Hunter Sr. and Betty Jeannie Hunter, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sisters Linda Kay Fuller and Lynne Ray Owen. He is survived by his sister Lisa Anne Phillips.
Ray was married to the love of his life, Pamela Kay Hunter, who also preceded him in death. Together they built a life centered around family, loyalty, and making the most of every moment.
He is survived by his children Raymond “Tommy” Thomas Hunter III and his wife Ellen Hunter, and Megan Jones. Ray was a proud grandfather to Juliann Jones (18), Hunter Jones (16), Henry Hunter (10), Oliver Hunter (8), Rowan Hunter (4), and Maeve Hunter (2), each of whom brought him immense joy.
Early in his life, Ray lived life in the fast lane, traveling the country through his passion for racing. As the years went on, he shifted his focus to supporting his family, dedicating himself to the Trucking Industry. Through determination and grit, he eventually started his own company, building a life where, as he liked to say, “every day was a Saturday.”
Ray had a deep love for fishing and boating, and he never missed a chance to get out on the water. He was also a passionate baseball fan who could always be found enjoying the game. More than anything, Ray loved being around people. He had a larger-than-life personality and an ability to turn any gathering into a celebration. He never shied away from a good time and had a gift for bringing people together wherever he went.
Those who knew him understood why he earned the nickname “Big Play Ray.” He was the life of the party, the guy who made memories happen, and someone who truly loved life, loved his family, loved his friends, and loved his loyal dog, Liebe.
Ray will be remembered for his big personality, his generosity, his stories, and the countless good times he shared with those around him—and of course his kisses. His spirit, laughter, and love for life will live on through the family and friends who were lucky enough to know him.
His family will carry forward the lessons he lived by: work hard, love your people, enjoy the water, and never miss a chance to celebrate life.
A Celebration of Life for Ray will be held on Saturday April 11, 2026 at 11 am at The Cross Loganville, 3275 Tig Knight Road, Loganville, GA 30052. Officiated by Lead Pastor Tim Cash.
There will be a luncheon to follow for everyone. Location and address will be provided at the service.
